FAQ
About the eSIM
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into your phone. There's no physical card to insert — you simply scan a QR code to install it, and you're connected. It's the easiest way to get mobile data when traveling.
Which countries does this eSIM cover?
One eSIM works seamlessly across Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau — no need to switch plans when crossing borders.
Do I need a VPN in China?
No. This eSIM routes your data so that Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and other global apps work directly — no VPN app required.
Which network does it use?
The eSIM runs on China Telecom's 5G/4G/LTE network, with reliable coverage in cities and rural areas.
Can I make phone calls or send SMS?
This is a data-only eSIM (no local phone number). You can make calls and send messages through internet apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, FaceTime or Messenger. Your primary SIM stays active for regular calls and texts.
Before You Buy
Is my phone compatible?
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most recent phones work, including iPhone 11 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 4 and newer. To check on iPhone: Settings → Cellular → if you see "Add eSIM", your phone is compatible.
Which data plan should I choose?
Pick based on your trip length and usage. As a rough guide: maps + messaging + social media uses about 1–2 GB per week; frequent video streaming uses much more. When in doubt, choose the larger plan.
Delivery & Activation
How and when will I receive my eSIM?
Your eSIM is delivered by email after your order is confirmed — usually within minutes. The email contains your QR code, SM-DP+ address and activation code. No shipping, no waiting.
How do I install and activate it?
See our step-by-step eSIM Activation Guide. It takes about 3 minutes: scan the QR code (or enter details manually), then set the eSIM as your data line and turn on Data Roaming.
When should I install the eSIM?
We recommend installing it before your trip while you have stable Wi-Fi. Your plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network.
Can I reuse the QR code or move the eSIM to another phone?
No. Each QR code can be installed once, on one device. Do not delete the eSIM after installation — a deleted eSIM cannot be restored.
Can I top up or extend my plan?
Yes! Once installed, your eSIM stays on your phone for life — just don't delete it. Whenever you need more data (for this trip or your next one), we can recharge your existing eSIM remotely. No new QR code, no reinstall:
1. Find your eSIM's ICCID number (a 19–20 digit number starting with 89). On iPhone: Settings → General → About → scroll to ICCID, touch and hold to copy. On Android: Settings → About phone → SIM status → ICCID.
2. Email the ICCID to support@chinaesimtravel.com with your order number.
3. Pick any data plan — we'll load it onto your existing eSIM, usually within minutes.
Orders & Refunds
What is your refund policy?
Unactivated eSIMs can be refunded according to our Refund Policy. Once an eSIM has been activated, it cannot be refunded. If you run into any issue, contact us first — we'll do our best to make it right.
